Volunteers are at the heart of the Bruce County Playhouse and play a vital role in keeping Southampton’s theatre scene alive and welcoming. If you enjoy viewing live performances, meeting new people, gaining experience in theatre behind the scenes, or just discovering what makes a live theatre tick, volunteering with us is a great decision!

Volunteer Spotlight
Sal Laba
I have been involved with Bruce County Playhouse in one capacity or another for a number of years. For some of those years, I sat in the audience while my husband, David Udall, performed in the Sunday Showcases during the winter months. As we both loved live theatre, we attended all the plays that were presented in the Town Hall.
My volunteering with the BCP has been varied, but my absolute favourite position is greeting patrons as they arrive. I enjoy seeing the anticipation on their faces as they select their seats. During intermission, I usually try to interact with many to get some early feedback about the play. Following the performance I really enjoy the chatter and the laughter as they leave the theatre, often saying how they didn’t know the theatre was here and how they need to tell their friends about the show. As a social butterfly, I get so much
out of these interactions, socializing and welcoming so many to the theatre.
Also, volunteering for me represents a meaningful act of service and care that fills my heart with joy; it gives me a sense of purpose at the same time as it creates new bonds of friendship.
Janette Aiken
I don’t sing or dance and I am definitely not an actor, but I do enjoy watching someone perform up on a stage. The closest I’ve come to doing any stage work was co-hosting a high school talent show, many, many, many, years ago.
I’m not comfortable putting myself out there, but give me something to do in the background and all you need to do is ask. In fact, that’s what (Artistic Director) Natalie did!
What started as a conversation on a baseball diamond many seasons ago has led to years of my, and a few others volunteering with BCP.
I’ve been helping out where and when I can for the last 10 seasons. I’ve done whatever I can whenever I can, from painting sets, working the Markets, taking tickets at the door to updating spreadsheets and taking patrons up and down the elevator. I have even managed to get my family involved when needed.
I feel a sense of pride when I see patrons leaving a show laughing, with a smile on their face, or humming a tune. It’s been enjoyable meeting a group of people, fellow volunteers who over time you get to know and
recognize with a smile and a “hi” when out and about in Saugeen Shores.
